Ring Around The Moon

blackball Folklore has it that a ring around the moon signifies bad weather is coming. The ice crystals that cover the halo signify high altitude, thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. It is believed that the number of stars within a moon halo indicate the number days before bad weather will arrive. Give it a try the next time you observe a moon halo. Laura Thorne I dont think I've ever seen a moon halo - what a super image. Really spooky and beautiful at the same time.

David Rencher the ring part of the picture kind of looks like it is part of the lens flair but it is not

Gale I've heard that from fishermen in maine and farmers in vermont. Never the part about the stars though. That is cool.

Jeremy Stanley I saw a ring around the moon for the first time a few nights ago. I couldn't fit it in my camera's field of view, though. Do you suppose the altitude of the clouds affects the apparent diameter of the ring?

David Rencher i was using my Sigma 10-20 mm lens when i shot this which can fit almost anything

Michael Brenton The ring around the moon will most definitely vary with the altitude of the clouds, but also with your altitude. This particular ring, however, has been captured so well that you even see the individual colors with great clarity. I doubt I will ever see it that way .... ever. Much less have my camera with me then. I am still fascinated by this picture.
David Rencher Thanks All here is a link to the larger image here

Judy This is not your usual ring around the moon, which is called a corona. You have captured here a lunar 22 degree halo! you can see and read more here www.sundog.clara.co.uk/halo/circmoon.htm

Tamara Zenner I'm no expert on these kinds of things, but I seem to recall reading something about a 'Moon bow' -- similar to a moon ring, but more refractive of the individual colors bouncing from the distant sun and through the misty clouds, thus giving it the appearance of a lunar rainbow. Anyway, the captured image is breathtaking. Thank you for sharing!
