Stedmans Landing
Stedmans Landing
Stedman's Landing Established in 1852 and used as a community wharf until destroyed by the 1916 hurricane. The Wharf was an important factor in the life of the Montrose community. Located in an inward curve of
Mobile Bay, the warf was quite long because it had to reach the natural deep water traveled by bay boats along the
Eastern Shore, The wharf began at the foot of Sibly Street in
Montrose Alabama, where the bluff was about 50 feet high requiring a gradual slope downward. The slope allowed the freight car to go down the wharf by its own momentum on wooden tracks. This was a flat car for general use with portable sides used for certain commodities such as pottery. The return trip up the wharf with loaded cart was pulled by mule or ox. lumis

Historic Montrose Post office
Historic Montrose Post office
When Retired Riverboat captain Thomas W. Marshall and His Wife and Family Moved to Montrose Alabama and made there home here in 1883, he was appointed postmaster and served until his death in 1890. His widow was appointed to take his place and had the building constructed on the home property. Built in 1890 by postmaster Ida Babb Marshall, This building served residents of Montrose Alabama for many years. In those days, Mail arrived from Mobile Alabama by boat. Mrs Marshall would take unclaimed mail to the house every evening and the residents sometimes would knock on the door at night to get there mail. This building was last used as a post office in 1913. For a number of years during the 1940's, Florence and Richard Scott donated the use of this building as a lending library for the Montrose Community/ It, along with the adjacent Chapman-Marshall-Scott home, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Responsibility for the Historic Montrose post office was deeded to the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission in 2005. lumis
