I took a picture of a lunar halo over a year ago and posted it. I was kind of surprised when i started getting allot of emails about it. Mainly people saying they have never seen one before etc. We seem to get them quite regularly along the Gulf Coast. I guess they are not so common in other parts of the world? or people don't go outside much on cold nights and look up at the sky. Anyway here are some of my Pictures of Lunar Halos over the past year or so, I try and take pictures of them whenever i see one but i cant always.
Folklore has it that a ring around the moon signifies bad weather is coming. The ice crystals that create the halo are high altitude thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. It is believed that the number of stars within a moon halo indicate the number days before bad weather will arrive.
